2022 Keynote panel

Making the case for freelancers

12:15 – 12:50

Freelancers play a vital role in the modern economy. They provide an essential, flexible resource to their clients, picking up new skills along the way which they go on to share with new clients. They are the bees which pollinate the flowers. They take on risk so the businesses they work with don’t have to. They sacrifice their own security to help others. Everyone agrees, freelancers are brilliant, right?

Well, actually … no. For some, freelancers are tax dodgers. For others they are people who cannot get a ‘proper job’. To the unions, well some unions, freelancers are a hidden, exploited workforce that need to be saved (and presumably turned into card carrying employees).

If freelancing is to reach its full potential and be truly valued by policy makers, as it should be, we need to understand where the cynics are coming from and develop coherent arguments for why our freelancers should be cherished. Join our panel at NFD to help us craft the argument.
